How to Apply for Carta d’Identità in Italy – Step-by-Step Guide (Residents & Newcomers)

 What is the Carta d’Identità?

The Carta d’Identità is the official Italian identity card, used as proof of identity and residence. It’s available in two formats:

  • Electronic (CIE) – plastic card with chip, valid for travel in EU and Schengen countries.

  • Paper – only issued in rare emergency cases.

Where to Apply

You can apply at the Ufficio Anagrafe of your local Comune (municipal office) where you are registered as a resident.

Documents Required

Bring the following:

  1. Valid passport or previous Carta d’Identità (if renewing)

  2. Codice Fiscale

  3. Residence certificate (residenza) – your name should be in the Anagrafe records

  4. Permesso di soggiorno (if non-EU citizen)

  5. Recent passport-size photo (biometric standard – white background, 35×40 mm)

  6. Payment receipt (around €16.79 + €5–€10 for Comune fees)

Application Process

  1. Book an Appointment

      : Many Comune require booking via their website or the official Prenotazioni CIE portal. Tip: Call your Comune’s office first to check if they have a token system or if you must book online. If you cannot book online, request them to provide you with the next available appointment directly  sometimes they can give you a nearby date.
  2. Visit the Ufficio Anagrafe on your appointment date with all documents.
  3. Fill the application form provided by the office.
  4. Provide your fingerprints (for electronic card).
  5. Pay the fees at the counter.
  6. Receive a temporary paper certificate (valid until your card arrives).
  7. Wait for deliveryThe electronic card is usually delivered in 6–10 working days to your registered address.

Fees

  • Check your Comune’s website for local requirements (some accept only digital photos).
  • If your residenza registration is incomplete, you cannot apply yet.
  • For children under 14, both parents must be present or give written consent.
  • New Update: Many Comuni now offer “open days” for Carta d’Identità applications — no appointment needed on these specific days. Check your Comune’s announcements to take advantage of this faster option!
